FAQ

How do I pay my bill?

We do not accept payment online right now. We take payment by cash, check, money order, debit or credit card, PayPal, or bank transfer. You are always welcome to drop off or mail a check or money order. You can also pay by giving us your debit or credit card over the phone. There is a 1.5% fee for debit cards and a 3.5% fee for credit cards. Additionally, you may pay remotely through either PayPal (though the fees tend to be higher) or bank transfer.

I'm not wealthy, and neither is my spouse/family. Why should I get a will?

Having a will protect not only financial assets, but other aspects of your life. For example, it might have provisions for what you want to be done with your remains, or who makes decisions for your children in case you are medically incapacitated.

My spouse and I are not wealthy, do not have children, and do not share many assets. Why should we get a property settlement agreement?

Having a property settlement agreement protects not just your financial assets, but other aspects of your life. A property settlement agreement will often contain provisions that are not financial in nature, such as non-harassment clauses that protect you from being harassed by your ex.

I love and trust my soon-to-be-spouse. Why would I get a premarital agreement (commonly known as a prenup)?

Although we facilitate many divorces, it is truly our wish that every marriage works out. However, the statistics speak for themselves:

Why should I get a lawyer instead of representing myself?

A lawyer is an expert - three years of law school, the bar exam, and years of practice in and out of court translate into experience. That experience can help you evaluate what the best course of action is, and can save you money in the long run by helping you figure out what the most likely outcomes are, what your strategic advantages are, what a judge is likely to think, and what the law means.

Can you guarantee an outcome?

It is unethical for any attorney to guarantee an outcome; it simply isn't possible. Our value is our experience, expertise, and judgment which can help you evaluate all the likely outcomes and select the path that has the best chance of leading you to that resolution.

Why should I schedule a consultation?

A consultation is a relatively low-cost way to understand the legal aspects of your situation, legally speaking. Even if you choose not to retain our services, we will give you honest, ethical advice that will definitely help you move forward.

Why do you charge for consultations?

A lawyer's value comes from their time. We dedicate time and effort to every consultation, and give real, actionable legal advice during that meeting that you benefit from even if you decide not to retain. For those reasons, we usually charge for consultations.

What can I expect from a consultation?

Before the consultation, we will ask you to fill out an information sheet including your name and contact information. In the consultation, we will get a feel for your case, listen to everything you have to say, and give our first impressions and short-term advice.

Is there anything I need to bring with me to a consultation?

Be sure to bring documents that you believe are relevant, notes about your case if you have them. If you are coming in for an estate planning appointment, be sure to bring the questionnaire completely filled out, and any previous wills that you have had. If you have any questions, be sure to ask!

I'm not fluent in English. Are there translators available in your office?

We have a staff member fluent in Spanish. For other languages, we recommend having a close friend or family member who you completely trust who is able to translate for you.
